A long-awaited homecoming: Marcus Rashford returns to Manchester United
The car park at Manchester United’s Carrington training base was bathed in late‑summer light on Sunday when Marcus Rashford stepped out of a car and into a scene he once feared would never happen. The forward, 28, had not worn a United shirt since his final appearance on 12 December 2024 in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzeň.
Rashford, a product of the Manchester United academy, has made 426 appearances for the club. His return comes nearly two years after that December match, marking the end of a 730‑day absence from the team.
The exile began after a breakdown in relations with former head coach Ruben Amorim, who froze Rashford out of the squad. The impasse prompted loan moves to Aston Villa and then to FC Barcelona, where he spent the last season under Hansi Flick.
Barcelona chose not to trigger a £26 million option to buy Rashford before the mid‑June deadline, despite Flick publicly stating he would miss the player. No other club met United’s £40 million valuation, leaving the door open for a reunion.
During his time away, Rashford was granted leave after England’s World Cup campaign. His Sunday return featured a spontaneous stop to greet fans, a chorus of thanks and a round of photos before he entered the training complex.
Michael Carrick confirmed on Saturday that Rashford will join the first team as they travel to the Republic of Ireland for the next stage of pre‑season. The forward is expected to fly to Dublin imminently to rejoin his teammates.
United’s head coach spoke after a 1‑1 draw with Paris Saint‑Germain, recalling his own history with Rashford. “I’ve played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history,” Carrick said, adding that the full squad, including Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martínez, will be together in Dublin.
Carrick had earlier hinted at an open door when asked about Rashford’s future in April. “There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” he explained, noting that nothing had been decided at that point.
Rashford’s season at Barcelona yielded 14 goals and 14 assists, and he publicly expressed a desire to stay at the Camp Nou. “I’m not a magician but if I was, I would stay,” he told reporters in May, emphasizing his ambition to win as much as possible.
With a month left in the summer transfer window, the prevailing sentiment inside Old Trafford and within Rashford’s camp is that he is likely to feature for his boyhood club next season, though no official confirmation has been made.
