£46m price tag stalls Newcastle United’s bid for Lucas Bergvall
Newcastle United are looking to plug a midfield void after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and missing out on Johan Manzambi, who chose Aston Villa. A £46 million offer for Tottenham’s 20‑year‑old Lucas Bergvall has been rejected, leaving the Magpies still in search of a replacement.
Spurs have turned down the bid, which David Ornstein reports for The Athletic, saying the offer "exceeded the approaches made by Nottingham Forest to date". The rejection Tottenham value the player above the current price.
The club’s statement makes clear that "all attempts to sign the 20‑year‑old so far, including higher proposals, have been rejected by Spurs", but adds that a sale could be considered if the figures reach a level they deem suitable. That indicates a price‑setting exercise rather than a flat no‑go.
Bergvall has informed Tottenham of his preference to seek an opportunity elsewhere this summer, despite being under contract until June 2031. His desire to move adds urgency to Newcastle’s pursuit.
Newcastle’s need is obvious: they sold Tonali to Spurs earlier in the window and also missed out on signing the Swiss international Johan Manzambi, who moved to Aston Villa instead. Adding a young, technical midfielder fits their recruitment plan.
The Swedish midfielder has made 78 appearances for Tottenham since arriving in a £8.5 million deal from Djurgården in 2024. Last season he featured 33 times, scoring one goal and providing five assists.
Tottenham have already bolstered their midfield with Mateus Fernandes and Tonali, creating potential room for movement but only at the seller’s price. Their depth means they can afford to hold out for a higher fee.
Bergvall’s recent ankle issue in January adds a cautionary note for any buyer, while Spurs’ willingness to wait suggests they are not in a rush to sell. That matters because it tells you two things straight away: Newcastle are serious, and Tottenham still see more value.
Newcastle may test Spurs again, but if the fee climbs beyond the £46 million mark, the sensible move would be to look elsewhere. The next step for the Magpies is to decide whether to increase their offer or pursue an alternative midfield target.
