€2m fee moves Gulacsi to Villarreal as Leipzig line up Nyland backup
Peter Gulacsi will join Villarreal for a €2 million fee, with Ørjan Nyland earmarked as the new backup goalkeeper at RB Leipzig, Fabrizio Romano reports. The transfer has been finalised and marks a rare €2 million deal between a Bundesliga veteran and a La Liga side.
The former RB Leipzig captain and seasoned Bundesliga veteran is heading to his new La Liga outfit for the €2 million fee. Sport adds that performance‑related bonuses are attached to the agreement, suggesting the deal includes incentive clauses beyond the base amount.
Leipzig keeper Maarten Vandevoordt will also receive a new back‑up, as Nyland is expected to serve in that capacity. Vandevoordt is firmly established as the Saxon club’s No. 1, meaning the experienced Norwegian will arrive as a reliable deputy and locker‑room presence.
Ørjan Nyland, the Norwegian World Cup hero, is a free agent after most recently representing Sevilla. He originally joined Leipzig during the 2022/23 campaign following Gulacsi’s serious knee injury, and became available on a free transfer this summer.
After Stuttgart passed on the Norwegian World Cup hero, Ørland Nyland may be headed back to the Bundesliga after all. Stuttgart remained uncertain about entering the market for another goalkeeper, fearing Nyland would have to surrender the starting role once Seimen returned.
Leipzig are working on Nyland’s return, with Sport reporting that the free‑agent is close to re‑joining the club. A move to Leipzig would give Nyland a clearer long‑term role, complementing Vandevoordt’s position as first‑choice keeper.
The €2 million fee, modest by today’s standards, highlights how clubs balance cash outlays with performance bonuses and free‑agent signings. Leipzig’s strategy of securing a seasoned backup while Villarreal adds a veteran goalkeeper reflects broader market trends of prudent spending and squad depth management.
