£22‑million chance: Aston Villa eye Palhinha as defensive fix
Aston Villa have identified a £22 million opportunity to sign 31‑year‑old João Palhinha, as Bayern Munich signal willingness to let the defensive midfielder leave the German club this summer. The club says the deal would fill the vacancy created by Boubacar Kamara’s injury concerns and represents the right choice at this moment.
Sporting director Christoph Freund publicly admitted that João Palhinha is on the market this summer, dropping a clear hint that Bayern Munich want him to move on. Freund also placed Sacha Boey in the same bracket, saying both players have genuine suitors across Europe and could walk into plenty of squads.
Aston Villa are keeping close tabs on how the situation unfolds, viewing Bayern’s openness as a transfer boost. The club’s interest intensifies as Palhinha’s future in Munich becomes uncertain.
Palhinha told he has zero desire to leave Munich, insisting he wants to dig in, fight for his spot and prove himself in Bavaria. This creates a standoff between a board eager to sell and a player determined to stay, making summer negotiations messy.
During the 2023‑24 season at Tottenham Hotspur he made 33 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists over nearly 2,200 minutes. He recorded an 85 % passing success rate, 20 interceptions and 52 tackles in the league, and added seven goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.
Tottenham refused to trigger a £22‑million to £25‑million buy option, indicating a valuation ceiling for the midfielder. Villa would therefore need to meet a price upwards of £22 million for a short‑term fix that offers little resale potential.
Unai Emery already relies on Boubacar Kamara, who performs the same ball‑winning and defensive anchor role when fit. Adding Palhinha would not provide a distinct tactical upgrade but would duplicate an existing position.
Villa’s ambition to compete in the Champions League next term calls for a creative wide midfielder or number‑eight, qualities Palhinha does not uniquely possess. His reluctance to leave Germany and the high fee further complicate the prospect, making the deal a risky gamble for the club.
