2028 contract fuels Van Overeem’s long-awaited Utrecht return
FC Utrecht have secured the services of 32‑year‑old midfielder Joris van Overeem from SC Heerenveen, signing him on a contract that runs until 2028, as announced at 11:27 on Vandaag. The move ends a protracted negotiation period between the two clubs and marks Van Overeem’s return to Utrecht.
Van Overeem previously featured for FC Utrecht from 2018 until 2022, accumulating valuable Eredivisie experience. His earlier spell laid the foundation for the club’s midfield dynamics during that period.
The midfielder explained his motivation, saying, “When I left four years ago, I felt I hadn’t achieved everything. Now I’m back to fulfil those goals, one of which is winning the KNVB-Beker.”
He added, “I return as a more complete player, with more experience and baggage. I look forward to applying that experience for FC Utrecht and helping the new coaching staff create a fresh Utrecht on the pitch.”
Heerenveen technical manager Johan Hansma remarked, “With Joris we say goodbye to an important player for our squad. He has repeatedly indicated his desire to move to FC Utrecht because he wants to work closer to home.”
Hansma continued, “The transfer was only possible if the conditions were met, and we thank Joris for everything he contributed this past season.” The agreement finally materialised after a prolonged period during which the clubs could not reach a deal.
